Cardinal Cupich Celebrates Mass for Red Cloud Indian School

November 3, 2017 — Chicago’s Cardinal Blase J. Cupich presided over Mass at the Archbishop Quigley Center in Chicago on Nov. 2, All Soul's Day, honoring Red Cloud Indian School of Pine Ridge, South Dakota. The traditional Mass also featured smoke, Oglala Lakota drumming, and special music.

Robert Braveheart Sr. and Roger White Eyes performed a Memorial Song, remembering and commemorating those who have gone before us:

In addition to Cardinal Cupich, Fr. George Winzenburg, SJ, President of Red Cloud School, and Fr. Brian Paulson, SJ, Provincial of the Midwest Jesuits, attended, along with several other Jesuits.

Following the Mass, a reception was held; Fr. Winzenburg and Fr. Paulson both spoke of the Jesuits’ longstanding and ongoing presence with the students of Red Cloud School, and of the positive impact of the ministry on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.

Special emphasis was given to the role of Red Cloud’s benefactors in allowing the Jesuits to continue to serve at this vital frontier. Both Fr. Winzenburg and Fr. Paulson thanked the guests and generous donors, and appealed for those who are able “to give, because the need is so great.”
