The University of Detroit Mercy (UDM) has been awarded a three-year grant to coordinate the Campus Kitchen at UDM Program. Campus Kitchens is a national student-run program started at Saint Louis University (SLU) that promotes anti-hunger programs in communities near designated schools.

Student volunteers prepare meals with unused food from cafeterias and deliver them to food centers for distribution. The Campus Kitchen at UDM is the first college program in the state of Michigan and the first in the entire region of the Chicago-Detroit Province of the Jesuits.

UDM worked for several years to get this project underway with a number of very committed staff, students and community partners.  As of January 2011, 28 schools are participating in the program; in addition to UDM and SLU, other Jesuit institutions that have Campus Kitchens include Gonzaga College High, Gonzaga University and Marquette University.

Since 2001, more than 25,000 student Campus Kitchens volunteers have donated more than one million meals to their communities.
