Christ the King Jesuit College Prep Wins Prestigious Architecture Award

April 20, 2011 in News

Christ the King Jesuit College Preparatory School has been honored with the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Award for Architectural Excellence in Community Design from the Chicago Neighborhood Development Awards (CNDA).

The CNDA, established in 1995, looks to recognize the essential role that both non-profit and for-profit developers play in building communities in Chicago-area neighborhoods.

The Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Awards for Architectural Excellence in Community Design recognizes and encourages best practices in community design, landscape design, and architecture. The winning projects clearly and successfully demonstrate a contribution to the visual, social, and cultural life in the communities they serve.

The award for Architectural Excellence in Community Design is aimed at projects that

  • Demonstrate superior design quality responsive to the neighborhood context and the constraints imposed by funding and regulatory agencies;
  • Successfully respond to the needs of the population served;
  • Enhance the overall development of the local community; and
  • Exhibit a creative design solution that could become a model for projects in other neighborhoods.

John Ronan Architects created a place that inspires excellence both in those who study within its walls and those who live outside of them.

The topic Practical Spirituality in Our Contemporary World addressed the questions
• How do we make time for reflection and prayer in the midst of our hectic lives?
• How do we construct lives of purpose and meaning?
• What principles can serve as our foundation in a fractured, fast-paced world?
• How do we incorporate practices and activities that reflect our beliefs?

The mission of the First Friday Club of Chicago is to provide a forum for men and women to make a connection between work, faith, values and issues that affect our daily lives.

Fr. McGrath serves as the president of Loyola Academy in Wilmette, IL and on weekends presides at Old St. Patrick’s Church, Our Lady of Perpetual Help, and Loyola University. A popular retreat leader and noted homilist who focuses on the practical living of Catholic faith, he uses storytelling, scripture, wisdom from traditions, and the spirituality of St. Ignatius of Loyola to help audiences reflect and experience God in all things. Fr. McGrath is a native of Chicago and attended Marist High School. He holds a B.A. in American Government from the University of Notre Dame, an M.Div. from the Jesuit School of Theology, and an M.S. in Learning and Organizational Change from Northwestern University.

UDM supports the Campus Kitchens project!

March 9, 2011 in News, Social and International

The University of Detroit Mercy (UDM) has been awarded a three-year grant to coordinate the Campus Kitchen at UDM Program. Campus Kitchens is a national student-run program started at Saint Louis University (SLU) that promotes anti-hunger programs in communities near designated schools.

Student volunteers prepare meals with unused food from cafeterias and deliver them to food centers for distribution. The Campus Kitchen at UDM is the first college program in the state of Michigan and the first in the entire region of the Chicago-Detroit Province of the Jesuits.

UDM worked for several years to get this project underway with a number of very committed staff, students and community partners.  As of January 2011, 28 schools are participating in the program; in addition to UDM and SLU, other Jesuit institutions that have Campus Kitchens include Gonzaga College High, Gonzaga University and Marquette University.

Since 2001, more than 25,000 student Campus Kitchens volunteers have donated more than one million meals to their communities.
